When to check the "Export as EVEN" gedcom tag

What are the circumstances under which you should checkmark "Export as EVEN" when you create a new event? (This is in Settings > Fields > Person > Events.)

I discovered that Reunion does not have built-in events for WILL (will) or PROB (probate), which are standard GEDCOM events. In Reunion, if I create Person Events for these GEDCOM tags, I think you do NOT check the "Export as EVEN" box ... but is that correct?

If you want to export an event using the GEDCOM tag EVEN or TYPE, check that "Export as EVEN" box. Additional information about this can be found in the manual by searching for "export gedcom tag." See this item...
GEDCOM Tag, Person and Family Fields
    ...in the Search Results.

It's not a matter of "wanting" to export an event using EVEN/TYPE. It's whether or not I should:

If the GEDCOM tags that I want to add to Reunion are valid GEDCOM tags (WILL and PROB) ... it seems to me that the "Export as EVEN" checkbox should NOT be checked. I'm asking if that is correct.

None of the default set of built-in GEDCOM tags in Reunion 14 have that box checked.

Is "Export as EVEN" only necessitated when you create a custom (user-defined) tag (one that does not exist in the GEDCOM standard)?

I'm frustrated by this myself, but this is not a Reunion issue. I've tried to decipher the "specification" to understand how the gedcom tags work here https://www.familysearch.org/en/gedcom/ but I cannot figure out when to use EVEN or why older tags were deprecated. If anyone has a link to a clear resource, I'd love a link.

This is also complicated for me at least by the fact that I export to TNG, which allows me to create custom tags. In that case, I'm not even sure that I need to pay attention to the standard, since all my work is in-house, as it were. I might have to spend some time querying Claude about this.

I would recommend you check to see what the receiving app or site expects to see for those fields. If they support all of the assigned GEDCOM tags, then it's okay to export it without having that box checked. We included this as an option just in case it was needed.

I hope you find this helpful in deciding how to best move forward

I export to TNG and don't use the Export as EVEN - I've set up a bunch of custom GEDCOM tags, and once setup in TNG to be imported it all just works.

Everything on this page comes from Reunion via GEDCOM file
