    Media Locations when adding media

I am long-time user of Reunion but am returning to genealogy after an extended hiatus, so apologies if this is a basic question.

I often want to add media items to individuals and events. Usually, I will download an image, apply my naming convention and store the file before adding it to the various media locations. However, sometimes I just want to do a simple drag and drop from a website e.g. Ancestry to a media location. However, when using this method, the files are not being stored in the path that I have set in my folder settings for media. Rather than storing in the location I have defined, it is storing them at the default Reunion location.

    Thanks in advance

I have this same issue. I set a location ~/Documents/Genealogy/pictures for Media in the Settings : Folders tab. I set the same location in the File > Sharing Status menu (at the bottom). When I copy + paste into the General pane in the Media sidebar, the image goes to the default ~/Pictures/Imported Media. When I drag + drop an image from the desktop, the image defaults to remain at its current path.

    macOS 15.5 with Reunion 14.0 (build 250702)

My first recommendation to you both (Keith Bage and DrJJWMac) would be to verify that Reunion 14 has full disk access. To do this, click on the Apple and select System Settings. Then, select Security & Privacy. Next, select Full Disk Access. If Reunion 14 is not shown in the listing of apps with Full Disk Access, click the "+" under that listing to add it. Then, use the selection window that opens to navigate to your Applications folder and select Reunion 14. Finally, click "Open. (You may or may not be prompted to "quit and reopen" Reunion 14. If so, please do it.)

Then, try adding an image by dragging and dropping from a web site.

        Hi Deb,

Many thanks for the recommendation. I have checked the settings and found that Reunion did not have full disk access as suggested. Great, I thought. I have turned full access on for Reunion 14, restarted Reunion and tried to import another image from the web. Unfortunately, it is still not going to the folder path I have defined for media. Instead, it is storing files at ~/Pictures/Reunion Pictures/Imported Media/, which I believe is the default set for the application and is stored in Reunion 14 Folder Preferences.

I can confirm that giving full disk access to Reunion works on my system. I can copy an image from the Web, paste the image into the General panel of the Media tab, and the file is created at the preferred folder location. I can also confirm that, once the file is added to the Media panel, I can move the file to any location at the Finder level and Reunion is able to locate it.

I might ask one additional questions for clarification.

          * Why does one have to set a preferred location for imported media in both Settings:Folders:Media and File->Sharing Status->Imported Media Folder? It seems the former controls only where Reunion first searches at the dialog to Import, whereas the latter setting only controls where media goes when imported. Should these two folder locations be the same, or at least be set at the same dialog setting (rather than in two different ways).

Perhaps this duality is the reason Keith Bage is still having issues???? The default import location is not controlled by the Settings:Folders:Media panel. It is controlled by the File->Sharing Status->Imported Media Folder.

            That would be my guess.

Try changing the location for "Imported" files in the File -> Sharing Status / Imported Media Folder section. (I.e., click the "Change..." button and use the window that opens to navigate to the location you are wanting them to be saved and click "Select.")

Afterward, try dragging an image from a web site.

I hope you find this helpful

Thanks Deb , and in particular DrJJWMac , for pointing this additional setting out. That has resolved my issue. I don't think I've ever been in that dialogue, so I would likely not have found that on my own. I'm not quite sure I understand why it's there though. I'm not currently using ReunionTouch, but have it on my list of things to try.

I am glad that I just happened into the conversation that Keith Bage started about Media Locations when adding media. The idea of "granting Reunion Full Disc Access" seemed so obscure to me, I wondered why Reunion had not automatically been configured to have Full Disc Access in the first place when we got the application. If it was necessary to fix Keith's problem, why wasn't that already an automatic feature of the Reunion application. Like Keith, I've been gradually resuming my genealogy work after dealing with other matters the last few years, and it seems a lot about the application has escaped me.

The granting of Full Disk Access is something that needs to be done by the user after the initial installation and startup of Reunion. We cannot make it happen during the installation and startup process. Note: it is not always necessary for Reunion to have Full Disk Access. See the AI overview at this URL...

I.e., many users can use Reunion just fine by allowing it access to the Documents folder when asked during the initial installation/startup process. But, having full disk access has helped some users resolve some issues with Reunion not having access to specific locations on their Macs.

Doing so did not actually help resolve the issue Keith was seeing. Keith needed to change the location of the Imported Media to a location other than the default location. This is done in the File -> Sharing Status / Imported Media section by clicking the Change button in that section and using the window that opens to navigate to the folder he wanted and selecting it.

I hope you find this helpful in clarifying things
