    I use angle brackets for this purpose, otherwise I have too many square brackets to deal with. As always, YMMV!

      I've used "Tim's method" and it worked for me. As I also have 9 trees in Ancestry.com, I like to use a surname option that works well in searches. So I hyphenate the wives' married names with Unknown until I discover their maiden name, e.g. Unknown-Meara.
