    Exporting to TNG

    Hi,

I hope someone can help me. I am about to purchase TNG in order to have my tree on a website to share with family members. I have been considering this for several years and have procrastinated as I find the whole set-up process a bit daunting.

I understand how to get TNG, I have chosen the web host and a domain name (I think). What I am unsure about is exporting the GEDCOM. Do I need to download something to get the files to the website? Darrin from TNG suggests using a separate program such as Filezilla, though he said that the web host may send something to do this. (Darrin has been super-helpful!) Reunion help also says to choose which character set will be compatible with the destiination software. How do I know what that is?

I would appreciate any help from this very knowledgeable group!

    Thanks,
    Achra

You should export from Reunion as UTF-8

You should ensure that your site's database is setup as utf8_xxxxxxx_ci where xxxxx is a language that you choose - the main consideration of this is the sort order of letters in alphabets if your database contains any accented characters - so for example are you expecting ä to sort with a, or separately at the end of the alphabet. And do you want a search for a to also find ä. If this is too confusing, then using utf8_general_ci would be a good choice.

(If it's not already done for you, you'd do this through your site's cPanel databases or phpMyAdmin screens to create the database with the right collation.

There is a setting in TNG to tell it you're using UTF-8.

    Good Luck

Thanks, Roger. Any advice is most welcome. Darrin from TNG did get back to me and said to use UTF-8. I should export it as a GEDCOM, right? Reunion help says, "Create a report with a destination of Web File/Folder or your web browser." By report, do they mean a GEDCOM?

No, you do not create a Report, you go to Reunion File menu ------> Export ------> GEDCOM...

Then set the options there to export everything with UTF-8

And check all the field in Optional Fields you want included

And note it's best in my opinion if you Export everything from Reunion, and then let TNG take care of what to show and what not to show based on its settings for how to show information about living people and who to show it too.
