    Merging Place Names

I have been busy cleaning up errors and double entries in my places list. My problem is when I have two of the same names, such as Virginia. They won't merge, what am I doing wrong?

If there are 2 places, there must be some difference between them.

Find the one that is correct.

Double click it to open the editing window

    Copy the entry

    Close the editing window

    Double click the other one

Paste in the correct copied text

Now you will have a single correct place name

Screenshot 2026-02-22 at 19.08.25.png Over the years I have always done that successfully. But is not always the case. I have quite a few places with no differences that I would like to condense into one where it doesn't work. As an example, the attached screenshot has a list of three different places where I cannot merge the entries.

What Roger says plus first check to see if you have a blank space. People have a tendency to automatically bang their thumb on the space bar. If that has happened, the unseen space, at the end, makes the two compared items different.
