add "note" to a new Place name

I know there is a Memo field when adding Place to an event on a record. But I need too add to the overall Place entry. Eg: "England, United Kingdom" effective 1801". Is there any method?

If you click on a place in the Places sidebar, you will see information for that place at the bottom of the column with three tabs: Usage, Note, and Geo. Click on the Note tab and you'll see a text field where you can add notes to that place. A search in the manual for "place note" will give you all the details.

Place notes don't show up elsewhere in the interface, unfortunately, but maybe that would be a good feature request.

I second that request. In that second Memo field I would like to add the names of the godparents at a baptism, or the witnesses at a wedding. The names of the sponsors are now in a Facts field; Since I have 9,780 of such cases, it should be possible to use the move function. ;-)

bmohr already answered your question so I have nothing more to add there. The sticking point for me is that the place notes don't show up in any reports, even if you add an index of places so I generally use the memo field. The only way I can see to export place notes is by creating a list of places and usage.

Thanks for tip, eventide. Yes, visibility would be VERY helpful. I'm trying to be historically "correct" with my place names (going back to 9th Century) so being able to see that if using England before 1801, I need to affix United Kingdom but if after, it's Great Britain. I have such stored in Logs but that gets cumbersome.
