I have always used FNU (first name unknown) and LNU (last…) Sorry, Brad - to each his own.

I put "something" in [brackets] so [wife] [married name] or [father] [surname] so that I have a placeholder and it sorts where I want them.

          a) I use "Unknown" for a surname
          b) "Male" "Female" for forename (it helps me keeps track of gender)
          c) for wives I only have a forename, I put the husband's surname in brackets: Mary [Smith]

          d) for foreign born I usually put the foreign birth name in ()s first, then the Americanized name, nicknames in ""s : (Giovanni) John "Flipper" Castanza

          e) unresolvable I use a / : Sally/Sue Smith/Smyth
