When you say "format," are you referring to the flow of the boxes on the chart? If so, this is called "orientation. There are several orientations available for each type of chart. Therefore, my suggestion would be to open the Descendant Chart. Then, choose Tree -> Orientation and select the appropriate orientation (perhaps Left-To-Right, or Top-To-Bottom) from the Orientation menu. Finally, click OK.
