Started new family file and all was well until I tried to enter Notes: it wont let me enter text in the Notes field but instead puts them in the unnamed window next to the Notes field. ???

Perhaps a better description of your problem would be helpful. Why? Because there is not any unnamed window next to the Notes field on the main family card. e.g. Which notes field are you referring to?

Easy fix -- just grab the gray bar between "Misc. Notes" and your actual note and DRAG it to the left.
By the way, "Misc. Notes" is the default note field, but you can add your own types of notes. I have added one for OBIT information, one for my research notes, etc.
