      I beg to differ.

The Church of Latter-Day Saints never set out for GEDCOM to be a community standard; their interest was to make it easy for third parties to submit information to the FamilySearch database. That it was useful to the outside was not relevant to them.

The people behind the GEDCOM 5.5.5 proposal claim an "independent" and un-encumbered version of GEDCOM but are not revealing their interests. In science, it is poor form to (a) hide your affiliations and (b) have your buddies "independently" review your work.
