How to set size of photos in family view

I've been trying to update my photos. I can add a photo from Finder to my family view, but have been finding that the photo size is too large. I have tried cropping, but the photos are STILL too large. One I'm working with now is 600x638 x resolution of 72, and even with cropping I can't get the whole face in the square.

What's the trick for getting the face in the square?
