    Wall Chart of Family Tree?

We want to have a largeish family tree (maybe 24" x 36") printed for a couple who are getting married.

We'd appreciate recommendations, especially of companies that can work with Reunion.

    I found this list: http://genealogy.about.com/od/wall_charts/
    Considering Heartland Family Graphics http://www.familygraphics.com/
because they specialize in charts created by Reunion.

Also we'd appreciate any suggestions on choosing various options, working with
printing companies, etc. We're considering a butterfly chart something like

but with the couple in the center.

Heartland Graphics did a magnificent job for me, when I did an extensive tree for a cousin who was getting married. I can recommend them wholeheartedly.

I went to our local UPS store which has a huge printer. I made a fan chart with 7 generations. The white aper is 24 inches wides and the chart took up 36 inches.

I made 5 generation charts for my sibs and cousins for Christmas last year. Save it as a PDF file, put it on a flash drive, and take to KINKO, or any other printer. I've forgotten the exact cost, but only about $3 each for 24x36. The photos end up only 7/8 inch so be sure they aren't scanned too dark! Some of mine were, and I'd like to redo them. I was pleased to have pictures for everyone but 3 GG grandparents. Good luck! Carolyn Blount

If you're ready to go, you can still use Ancestry.com's MyCanvas through September 2014. They make a beautiful chart, actually several sizes, and it arrives promptly. I've done three already and have a few more in the works until they shut down operations. I'll be sorry to lose them and am currently looking for a replacement.

For something this special I recommend Heartland Family Graphics. They are more than printers. They know Reunion and will give you recommendations about improving the chart itself, paper to use, etc.

Thank you all for your suggestions. It sounds as if the big question is whether the people involved will be satisfied with a layout that Reunion and I can produce. If yes, we can put the chart on a flash drive and go to a printer. If no, we're better off with a specialist company such as Heartland Family Graphics.

I did a 'Chart' as a PDF and it turned out to be about 30 some feet long. 38' is the maximum that can be created. Two local printers want about $200 for the job at 42" wide. I did a shorter one (18') at work.
My intent was to produce a wall chart of the entire tree for a Family Reunion where folks could add/correct data that I could use to update the Database.

We went to France last year to meet new cousins. I did a chart with the information we had gathered to date. Put in pics of our family and had it printed by Heartland Graphics. They did an excellent job. Emailed the file to them and they printed the copies. Nice size, about 17" x 32". I think it was about $12 per copy. The relatives poured over the charts as this was the first time they could figure out how they all were related (all lived in the same area for 8 generations). I highly recommend Heartland. Easy, helpful, and great work.

For what it's worth, we can print charts longer than 38 ft at HFG.

And thank you very much to those folks who put a good word in for us. We try very hard to add value beyond our high quality papers and inks.

Reunion can't produce a Graphic larger than 455".

Re: Wall Chart of Family Tree?

Hello again! As I mentioned, we're considering a butterfly chart (bow tie chart) something like

but with the couple in the center instead of one person. "His" pedigree chart would go in one direction and "hers" in the other.

How would I get Reunion to create a chart similar to this? The manual does not include the phrase "bow tie." It has "butterfly chart" but does not show what it means by this, and says a butterfly chart cannot be made from a pedigree chart.

I have used Reunion through several versions (currently 10.0.6) but have not done much with charts before. Just spent a long time trying to figure this out because the family expects me to be able to. Help would be appreciated!

Yes, but we use the native Reunion chart file, which can be much larger.

Reunion will not create a butterfly pedigree chart at the touch of a button, but it can be done with a little fiddling around. Although you may want to tweak the process, the basic idea would be to create a pedigree chart for the husband and redraw it in right to left orientation. Then create a separate pedigree chart for the wife and redraw it in left to right orientation. Copy one without frame and paste it into the other, and then you can arrange your butterfly chart.
