Safari & older Reunion vs. Maverick and newer Reunion

Currently have:

> Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 with Safari 5.1.10
> Reunion 8.06 (with about 38,000 individual entries)

Considering a change to:

> Maverick
> A newer version of Reunion (but which one?)

Is a transfer of current Reunion to a newer version doable, without running into compatibility issues with Maverick (if I install) and possible loss of data from 8.06, including notes/sources? What are alternatives?

The "tree" data also is on the Web at:

But, by personal choice, notes/sources are not included when upload to online.

Need guidance for myself and/or possibly an Apple-shop tech I would consult on what is/is not possible.

If you upgrade your current computer to Mavericks, all your current data files should be unaffected. (I have to admit I don't know if you can upgrade directly from 10.6 to 10.9.)

I believe the only Reunion version available to upgrade to is Reunion 10. Once it's installed, you can open your Reunion 8 family file with Reunion 10, and Reunion 10 will create a new file and fill it with your Reunion 8 data automatically.

Yes, after Apple announced it was no longer supporting 10.6.8 with security upgrades they provide a FREE upgrade from 10.6.8 directly to Mavericks. However, make sure your computer model, memory capacity, and disk space is compatible with Mavericks.

I have a desktop mini and a laptop, and both were running 10.6.8. My desktop is compatible and I upgraded it to Mavericks. My laptop is not Mavericks compatible and I continue to use OS 10.6.8, choosing NOT to upgrade the laptop as far as possible to Mountain Lion 10.8. Both systems run Reunion 10 just fine.

Just to share with you the solutions I have found to run legacy applications on newer Mac OS.

To run applications no longer supported by the latest Mac OS, I use now a 2014 MacMini with 2 HD (one SSD and 1TB) running Maverick with VMware running Snow Leopard. I also kept 1) an old 2008 MBPro with Mountain Lion (when I travel), 2) a few external backup HD with Snow Leopard installed and 3) a PowerPC iBook G3.

Before updating my website (farhi.org), I need to run once a month, FolderUpdater (by Steve W. Jackson) a software created to compare old and new Reunion web cards. The Leister application Reunion Web Tools designed to replicate the functionality of FolderUpdater creates a set of the new cards but does give you the option to merge them with the old set; not an easy task if you have many folders.

(To Leister, please include in a new version of your Web Tools application the possibility to merge new and old web cards).

I found that the easiest and fastest way to run these old applications is to start the PowerPC iBook and connect either the MacMini or MBPro as an external hard disk (with a firewire cable).

Mavericks is great but beware of some software which does not transfer (or only as an inferior new version), including Appleworks - goodbye to your databases! I also find Pages feeble and Numbers unusable and have changed to Word and Excel.

I suggest you google ANY application you really want to use in Mavericks and check for complaints. The new version of Garageband seems to be universally unpopular.

Reunion 10 is, on the other hand, a much improved version!

Go to roaringapps.com and click on Compatibility Table. The result is a very up to date list of which programs work with Snow Leopard thru Mavericks and iOS5 thru iOS7. This is a user input site and already has columns ready for input re: Yosemite and iOS8.

Jamie: You didn't say which versions of Numbers and Pages you tried out. I beg to differ on opinions. I used Word and Excel since the early 1990's both on Macs and PCs. For most users, both Apple apps are easier to use than Excel or Word. And they work quite slickly with the iOS versions. Please note that there is lots of difference between the previous and current versions of Pages and Numbers. If you are referring to the older version, find a friend who has the current version and take a tour.

When I finish an office I hold on a non-profit where I have reports in heavily scripted Word and one very complex Excel spreadsheet, I will dump these Microsoft fatso's from my Mac. (I inherited them with the position and they likely will be inherited by a PC user, so no point in converting them.)

For example, Pages will no longer open .rtf documents! So it can't conveniently be used with Reunion. I have now set Reunion to send reports to Libre Office. (I could use Text Edit of course, but neither it nor the old Pages handle .rtf really satisfactorily.)

Another thing I noticed a couple of days ago is that Pages no longer supports Outlining.

My iWork '09 applications were preserved when I upgraded from SL to Mavericks, and are not overwritten when the latest ones are downloaded (free). So I can go back if I want - but of course, the iWork '09 versions will not open documents written in the later ones - they have to be exported.

I kept a copy of the old Pages in my application folder under Maverick and asked Reunion to open reports (under Preferences) with that one and not the new Pages. It works fine.

So you now have two copies of the old.... In the Applications folder, you will find a folder named iWork '09. The old version of all three apps, Keynote, Numbers and Pages, are in said folder. This was automatically done for you when you updated to the current version.

Maverick may have automatically upgraded my iWork 09. When I noticed that the New Page did not work with Reunion, I may have copied the Old Page (from a backup Disk) elsewhere in the Application folder. I do not use Keynote and Numbers.

As a matter of fact, documents created with New Page cannot be opened with Old Page (you get an error message), you need to drag and drop them on the New Page icon.

A correction to my previous: The automatic retention of the old versions is just for whichever of the three applications you had installed. I help lots of people where I live and my experience is that most have all three applications, thus I forgot to say this. My bad!
