    Place/Geocode Issues

In the days before Reunion supported geocoding of places (i.e.: up until today), I spent many hours manually geocoding my places in TNG. I have many places that Google will not correctly geocode. Is there any way to import these painstakingly-coded places back into Reunion 10?

I've tried going about this a couple ways already. In exported GEDCOM files, TNG uses 0-level _PLAC records at the end of the file, which Reunion 10 ignores. I also tried exporting to a tab-separated text file, but the Import->Text feature does not have any way to import into the place fields.

Also, I can find no way to manually assign coordinates using the "Geo Code Place" and "Geo Code Multiple Places" windows. Is this correct?

Can the default zoom level of map windows be changed?

Finally, it seems the place list in the sidebar does not respect the "Font for lists and data entry" setting.

I'm in the same boat :-(

      Hi Brad,

Can you send an example GEDCOM file with the _PLAC records to our help email. It does not have to be a huge file, just one with 10 or 20 places.

      Thanks.

I've "bumped" a couple of threads (so they'll show with new posts if you check) in the beta forum where I gave examples of this and sent an eMail with a file attached.

You can enter the coordinates manually but there doesn't appear to be a way to use the map to choose a location. This is unfortunate as google often presents the wrong options for historical places.

Please add an option to allow us to mark a location on the map directly. This would make the geocoding much more useful!

You can type or paste into the "Geographic coordinates..." field, but even this field needs some work. It seems coordinates have to be entered in decimal degrees with a space between latitude and longitude, though there is no indication that this is the case. In fact, that field will happily accept and save any input (I just tried "These are some coordinates"), but Reunion ignores anything it doesn't understand.

This made for a very frustrating experience. I pasted in some coordinates that had a comma between the latitude and longitude and was completely mystified as to why the little downward-pointing disclosure triangle (that isn't really a disclosure triangle) didn't turn blue.

In my opinion, that field should accept coordinates in any of the common formats and do the right thing with them. At the very least, the correct format should be made evident (and documented) and others rejected.

Agreed, not that my agreement helps any.

I was excited to see R10 included geotagging facilities but the implementation feels half baked.

                  Re: Place/Geocode Issues

I fully support the need to be able to choose a position on a map to allocate to a place manually. I tend to use an address as part of my "place" i.e. "Willow Street, Middlesbrough, Teesside, England". Problem is I can't geocode this, since no options appear as the street no longer exists. I get options for "Willow Dr, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland TS6, UK" and "Willow Terrace, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees TS2 1TF, UK". Neither of these options are the address/location I want.
