    Forcing a source number?

Is there a way to re-number a source so that its number can be re-used?

I have a very important new source and would like for it to be Source #1. But the current Source #1 (obviously the first one I ever established) is taken. I don't want the new one to be the next available (#279)!

If you really want to do this, you'd need to

1 - duplicate Source 1 so it becomes Source 279

2 - find all people using the current Source 1

3 - go to each of those people to all events, notes etc where Source 1 might have been used and then assign Source 279 to them

    4 - delete Source 1

    5 - create a new source - it will be given #1.

      Makes sense. Thanks Roger.

Re: Forcing a source number? - next steps

oops, not quite done with this ...

        I can:
        - Mark the current persons using "old" Source #1 (these persons will later get the newly duplicated source); snd then
        - duplicate the "old" Source #1 ... now Source #279 has the same information

Question now is ... how can I assign marked persons, in one step, to the new Source #279?
(so that I can safely delete the old #1)

With Reunion 11 if seems possible to merge your original source into your duplicated one so say 1 into 60, as opposed to match and merge which would do it the other way round. Or have I misunderstood?

You can use apply a source to all Marked Cards using the Change screen - but you can only apply it as a general source - i.e. attached to the individual, but not to any specific fact or event.

If your current Source 1 is applied to Facts and Events, you really need to go and apply Source 279 to all the same facts and events before you delete Source 1

            or

You can think again about why you want to do this - does it really matter if a source has #1 or #279? - in my opinion it doesn't.

              Re: Forcing a source number?

OK, I got this to work as I wanted.
              BTW, I'm using Ver. 11.

The old Source #1 was only assigned to persons, and all as a General Source ...

I created the new Source #279.
Then I merged Source #1 with the new Source #279.
              That automatically assigned all persons formerly using Source #1 to Source #279;
and the Merge deleted Source #1.
So Source #1 is now available for my new ("VIS" Very Important Source).

Didn't need to use marked persons after all.
