    Macavo, My Heritage, other

Is anyone using any of the online search sites...
    1. if so, have you had problems uploading a Reunion11 gedcom?
    2. Do you find either Macavo, My Heritage, GenealogyBank, etc. really have resources not found on Ancestry or FamilySearch? Or through one's library like Heritage Quest?
    Thanks

    Hi Bonnie,

Can't answer #1 because I haven't tried that yet. Very seldom use GEDCOMs.

As for #2, I don't subscribe to Macavo or MyHeritage. I am registered on both sites but just don't feel I would get my moneys worth. As a senior on a fixed income, I have to be careful of where I spend my money.

I do subscribe to GenealogyBank and have for several years. I find it much more robust for newspapers than Ancestry, although Ancestry continues to add more newspapers all the time. My other subscription site is Fold3. Although I don't use it as much, I have gotten meaningful info/images from there.

I find that I do most of my research on Ancestry, FamilySearch & GenealogyBank, especially when it's a new family.

    Hope this is helpful,
    Kaye

      Hi Kaye,
Yes, helpful...thanks. I am also in the senior class, plus I don't want to get into that endless loop of "searching" on these pay sites only to get someone else's unsourced tree...or the same info I can get on Ancestry or FS...just wondered if I was missing something. I did try uploading my gedcom on Macavo as they were having a "sale", but it would not load, plus their site is quite difficult to navigate (IMO). Wasted waaaayy too much time, so un-joined!
Thanks for the tip on GenealogyBank...I can get through the library I understand. Will give it a go then.
      Many thanks, Bonnie

        Bonnie,

Two good FREE historical newspaper sites are
        Google newspapers - https://news.google.com/newspapers
Library of Congress' Chronicling America - http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov

Sometimes I forget to check them but often find interesting articles when I do check. I have a lot of family in the Pittsburgh, PA area and don't find much around there on GenealogyBank. Google newspapers & Chronicling America seem to have more. They're just not as easy to use.

          Thanks again, Kaye.
I have used Chronicling America, and it's fine. the Google News is new to me, so glad to know about it. Thanks much! Bonnie
