    Genealogy profesionals

    Didn’t know about this.

It seems there is a profession called an “heir hunter”! It involves creating family trees and looking for living relatives entitled to inherit someone’s money and assets, when that person dies without a will. I came across it on youTube and the Heir Hunter BBC series.

These guys (well, companies actually) try and locate the rightful heirs, they help them claim the inheritance and they get a commission for themselves. Not bad, huh?

In most countries if you don’t make a will, and there’s noone to claim your money, all that was yours will end up to the government's treasury department, eventually. Here’s the part that I like: it seems there are multiple companies on the job, often working on the same case, and it’s a question of being quick and lucky, to get first to the rightful heirs.

I’m searching for it now, and I see assorted articles about. Here’s an interview of such an heir hunter, Daniel Curran. The BBC series was about companies and cases in the UK, of course. I wonder whether it's a thing in other countries, as well.

Especially in the U.S., if there is money to be made from it, you can be assured that there are companies and people doing it.
