    Photos of other people

I'm going through a stack of pictures from my mother-in-law, and there are photos my father-in-law took while he served in the Army. Many of them are captioned on the back, like "John Doe, Mary Smith, U.S.O. Steps, Nome, Alaska, July 1954." I'd like to give these pictures to someone who would treasure them and use them to fill in part of their family story. Is there a website or service to 'advertise' these pictures and facilitate a connection?

    Thanks,

    Joe

One possible option would be the Veteran's History Project, part of the Library of Congress. While they don't really "advertise" their resources, per se, they do allow for searching of their collection online.

Since you have names and some additional information on the photos, I'd suggest posting on surname and/ or location message boards on Rootsweb.com Ancestry.com. Rootsweb is totally free, but is now owned by Ancestry. It's message boards are the same as Ancestry's now, but it's easier to see where they are in the header. On Ancestry, they are under "Help". I don't know whether accessing the message boards through Rootsweb makes any difference in terms of access to those without an Ancestry membership.
Last year I successfully reunited a photo of one Shtirka Pelasheva with her great grandson in Bulgaria. It only took him six and a half years to be looking for information and to find my postings. Include name, places, time frame, if you can in the subject line.
And don't change your e-mail address / contact information.

There is a Facebook group, Family Treasures Found, that does just that. Submit your photo with what you know, and they will get to work trying to reunite the photo with family.
Log into Facebook to start sharing and connecting with your friends, family, and people you know.
