I am trying to identify an old photo of a baby with a mother named Margaret taken in 1927.
I cannot work out how to do a search for someone born in 1927 with a mother whose first name included Margaret.

Try this...

Search for the mother who's first name includes Margaret.

This can be done by choosing Find and selecting these conditions...

Name -> First and Mid Name ... Contains ... <Margaret>

Then, click Find.

Next, choose "Unmark Everybody in Family File, then Mark Everybody in List" from the Mark menu button at the bottom of the Results sidebar.

The next search will help in finding babies born in 1927 with a one marked parent. Set up the following conditions to complete that search...

Events -> Birth -> Birth Date ... Contains ... <1927>

And

Parents > # of Marked Parents ... Equal ... <1>

Finally, click Find.

The results sidebar should show you babies born in 1927 with a mother whose name contains Margaret.
