Use of Source Citations vs General Sources in the Name field

    Hello,

I have just begun working in Reunion 11 and notice their are two source choices in the name field.

Since I have entered my previous sources in the name field as source citation, is there an advantage to switching to using General Sources for new entries?

Some of the name fields have more than one source, so I assume I should use the source citations in those entries?

    Thanks, Carol

A General Source is something that you'd use on the name screen to indicate that (unless otherwise noted) everything you've recorded about that person came from that General Source.

If you have derived different parts of information from different sources then you should not use General Sources.

Search the help for General Source and you'll find some more notes about it.

The most common use I've done for General Source is if I import a GEDCOM file from someone else, I will often apply a General Source to all those people indicating what GEDCOM file it came from before I then go about analysing that data or adding to it, at which point on an individual basis I will remove the General Source and replace it with more specific sources.
