    What does (cq) mean?

This is a very general question, but I'm hoping someone here has an answer.
Today I was working with a newspaper birth announcement. Several of the names have (cq) after them, and I'm not sure what it means.

    "Grandparents are Susan and Dannie(cq)..."
    "Great-great-grandparent: Ester(cq)..."

    Does anyone here know?

    Thanks!

cq: Cadit quaestio, Latin. It is used in copy editing to indicate that the preceding information has been verified. After a name, it usually indicates that the name's unusual spelling is correct and should not be changed. The cq is supposed to be removed during final editing. It looks like the editor left them in by mistake.

Well, that explains why I've never seen it before! It makes sense looking at those names; both could have alternate spellings. Thanks for solving that mystery for me!

Is this a companion or the same as "sic" which I've always understood to mean that the original was spelled incorrectly?

"sic" is supposed to be left in to alert the reader that the spelling or usage is quoted correctly.

"cq" is supposed to be deleted by the final edit. It is to alert the editor not to correct the unusual spelling.

Hi Bob, for a fuller explanation ask Google a question like this, "What does sic mean?" I found the response rather interesting and helpful.
