This may be a very basic question but tonight, in searching back from 1860 I noticed that there were very few census records earlier than 1860. Is there something I don't know about census records on line? I just subscribed to Ancestory and that is the only place I'm searching right now.

The 1850 U.S. Federal Census was the first that gave the names of all household members. In the previous censuses, only the name of the head of household was given.

So there are at least two reasons you'd find fewer "hits" before 1860:
[1] the population was smaller, and so there were few people to find, and
[2] before 1850, not all persons were named on the census.
