I wonder could anyone with knowledge of US family history, or the US today point me in the right direction, please. I am investigating the surname of Cuddon, originally from Suffolk, UK; and would like to know how to find out about the surname in the USA, both today and in years past. I'm sure there must be websites I can have a look at which might give me some lines to follow up.

Many thanks in advance.

It is advertised as "your genealogical starting point" and probably the best place to begin.

Also, this may help with the surname or any variants; check the mailing lists.
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/

Look at the Family History Library Catalog at:
http://www.familysearch.org/

and at the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS):
http://nehgs.org/

You could check person search web sites that are oriented around telephone numbers and mailing addresses, and do not neglect the possibility that a historical or genealogical organization in the Suffolk, UK area has data for you.

Interesting challenge. The name doesn't have a suname message board in rootsweb.com (now formally hosted by ancestry.com but still free, I think) and there's only one pretty old message posted on the genforum.genealogy.com surname message board. Searching the surname in family trees in ancestry.com doesn't bring up any clear US born Cuddons. I did get some hits in the US census records but not as many as I might have thought. Cyndi's list may have some other suggestions (e.g.access to immigration lists).

Other sites.- Rootsweb.com, genealogy.com, familysearch.org
All of these sites have surname lists with contact/response mode.

If you haven't tried this for contemporary Cuddons in USA, www.411.com has some in New York, Colorado and Florida.
