Does anyone know of a way of opening e-mail attachments in MS Word WITHOUT buying Word for Mac? I don't need Word as a word processor, I just need to read attachments.

You can use icWord, available from here...

It's a $20 shareware.

Appleworks will open Word files. However, you may have to drag the attachment out of the email to open it. The last time I tried to open a Word attachment in an email, it would only allow me to use Word, not Appleworks. But that was in 10.2.

All of the above. Download the attachment (hold down the "option" key, then click on the attachment) Appleworks SHOULD be able to open it.

You might try "Text-Edit Plus" also.

You could go the freebe route and download a msWord browser plug-in. The PDF browser plug-in also works great. Link follows.

Another free solution is NeoOffice/J (http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/en/index.php), although this is a full office suite. NeoOffice is a more Mac-like front end to OpenOffice, though still lacking in some areas. It does a great job of reading almost all Word documents.
