View Full Version : Dutch Reunion User Group, transfer files

This is a reply/question to fjvanbodegom, but it is not really on point. Anyway, could you tell me what the Dutch Reunion User Group recommends for the easiest way to transfer family files between Mac Intel and Windows platforms? Is there any way to avoid using GEDCOM files? Thanks for any help. Jay Carney

Documents made with a programm (does not matter what programm) has its own format.
The format of a Word document is different from a word document of Mellel or AppleWorks.
The same with genealogy programms.

So you have no choice, the only possibility to transfer genealogy data is to use Gedcom (with his drawbacks). Read the excellent chapter in the Reunion manual and also where gedccom primarly is designed for.
The Gedcom protocol can be interpreted on several ways by programmers, so that several dialects exist.

In Reunion you have the possibility to change gedcom tags when you export, so that the receiver has less problems. Another point is: when you made a lot of new field, did not add a gedcom tag, the field content is not exported. User defined gedcomtags should always start with an understroke.

So problems with gedcom is not only the interpretation of the programmer but also the (mis)usage of user defined tags.

Not really. Why would you want to avoid this?
