I've enjoyed the thread on "how far back can you go." It reminded me that one of the pieces of information that I have found valuable when researching my male English ancestors (Wootton -- English Midlands) is whether they were listed in the census as bricklayers/builders. It seems to have been hereditary from my oldest (1770s) to the present day in one of the descendant lines. My g3 grandfather was a cordwainer, but his father, uncles, brothers and sons were bricklayers. My greatgrandfather came to the US in 1889 and worked (as a bricklayer) on the Croton aqueduct before moving to the Seattle area (after the big fire) and found out that they didn't build with brick, so he ended up in the salmon canning industry.
