Writing a book
I have been elected by my gen. research group to write a book about my GG Grandmother, Janet Downie Hardie, a Scottish midwife.
http://web.mac.com/janmobley/index.html It will be historical fiction as I have most of the facts but have to make up her personality, etc. to make it an interesting novel. Janet, a widow, was one of the nearly 600 Mormons who traveled from Liverpool to Salt Lake, for 6 months, with a handcart company to reach "Zion" with her 5 children and sister. I'm wondering if any of you had ancestors who did a similar trek and would have information to share. Janet (I haven't been able to change my URL in the signature.)

Janet: Where in the U.S. did she start out from? There is a ton of information about the trek to Salt Lake over the Mormon Trail, including diaries, maps, handcarts, photos, etc. Check out the main Mormon sites and you are sure to find very interesting resource material for your story. Many of my husband's ancestors also 'came across' to Utah that way.

What a cool assignment! I have a suggestion for reading for some flavoring of the era and of another Mormon going from Scotland to Utah and covering an era from the late 1800's to the mid 1900's. The book is Symon's Daughter by Don Ian Smith. It is available at http://www.bridgehousebooks.com/.
The editor/publisher is Naida West who has written several historical novels centering upon Northern California and its Indians and early settlers. I don't know if you go to the State Fair in Sacramento but, if you are familiar, Naida also puts together the annual author's area in the Counties building.
