    Finding Spouses with same surname

I have many wives in my data that are shown, for lack of information, were entered with their spouses surname. With the advent of tools like find-a-grave many of these ladies can be "found". My question is how can I create a list where husbands and wives have the same surname.

    Thanks, Jim

Ooh, that's a hard one if you want a list of "matched pairs" for all names at once!

Easy if you have a specific name; Find "Last Name is XXX" AND "Spouse Name Contains XXX". But how to put a wild card in for XXX and have it the same for both fields?

Maybe I'm missing something, but in your list or report just substitute Married Name for Surname. That works unless the wife has remarried and the new marriage is the preferred one, I think. Works for searching, too.

This isn't exactly what you want, but it might be better than nothing if a better idea doesn't come up.

Open 'LISTS' from the side bar and choose people. Set columns for 'SEX' - 'LAST NAME' - 'MARRIED NAME' - 'FIRST & MID NAME'

Click on the 'SORT' icon at the bottom and choose 'MANUAL SORT'

        Set it up like this:
        PRIMARY - SEX
        SECONDARY - LAST NAME
        TERTIARY - MARRIED NAME

This will group all the females together and sort them alphabetically by their last names. You can then scan the list to manually find instances where the last name and married name is the same. A little cumbersome if you have a lot of people, but maybe you can make it work for you. And if you're lucky, someone will come along with a better idea!

If you potentially have many thousands of people to look through, you could view the index, and export 2 reports that contains say

          ID Last Name First Name

          and

          ID Married Name First Name

Then open both of them in BBEdit and compare them both - the lines that are not exceptions will be the women who have the same surname and married name.

You could first restrict the lists to females to make them shorter...
