    Scrivener Sale

I just stumbled across this deal from The Mac Observer and thought I'd pass it along since it's had such good reviews here.

For just a few more days you can purchase Scrivener for $19.50. I'm going to go download the trial version and see if it is for me.

Here is the link for anyone interested.

I'm still working my way through the tutorial. It does seem like it would be useful to anyone writing a paper, book, or family history. I would have loved this when I was in school and needed to write papers...much better than the 'index card' system I learned in the day. But I don't really have a planned use at this time. I do hope at some point in time to compile a 'Memories' book, inspired by Laura Hedgecock's Memories of Me book, but have no plans to this anytime soon. I'll finish the tutorial and purhaps pick it up next time it is one sale.

I just clicked the link and it appears they've extended the sale.

FWIW, I've been using Scrivener for a little while. I've used it to write assignments for my genealogical studies; I've used it for my father-in-law's memoirs then exported it to Bookwright; I use it for clients' research. I really like it.

Thanks Kim, I have been waiting for such a deal. It might be a time before I get around to using it, but one can't let such an opportunity slip by.

Jan, I'm considering the purchase of Scrivener, but can you tell me from your use if it is compatible with Adobe's InDesign CS6 publishing software. Until now, I've written manuscripts in Word then placed them in InDesign where I design the final book, convert it to pdf, ready for printing and binding at a commercial printers/binders. The price quoted by Kim is fantastic as I've seen it for sale elsewhere for twice that much.

            Regards,

            Patricia

Scrivener will output Word-compatible files, right? If so they can be placed into InDesign documents.

On the other hand, there may be other formats you can export from Scrivener that are incompatible. (I haven't used Scrivener)

                  Re: Scrivener Sale

Probably important to understand that Scrivener is primarily a writer's publication management environment, i.e. not really a 'true' and fully featured Word Processor; and not a 'Desktop Layout/Publishing' application. The text documents that are produced in Scrivener are actually 'lots' of individual TextEdit RTF files contained in a project file, which can be exported individually, collectively, or compiled into a complete documents which can all be later 'manipulated' in other software to produce the finished article required.

A brief quote from the manual might help to explain:

"Scrivener uses the standard OS X text editor, and therefore all of the features of OS X’s rich text editing system (which are showcased in Apple’s TextEdit application) are available. Scrivener also provides some extra word processing features. Most of these features are available via the Format (section A.7) and Edit (section A.3) menus, so it is recommended that you familiarise yourself with these.

The text engine, and Mac OS X: Please note that because Scrivener uses the OS X text system, its behaviour in this regard is defined by Apple. The way double- and triple-clicking on text works, the occasional awkwardness of features such as tables and bulleted lists, font changes and so forth, are all governed by the OS X text system, which is programmed by Apple and is out of our hands. The good news is this also means you get access to many sophisticated tools which would otherwise take years to program.

                  15.1 Rich Text Editing Philosophy

Scrivener supports a rich text editing environment, which means that it is loosely “what you see is what you get”. Unlike word processors or desktop layout applications, however, the precise formatting that you use when writing in Scrivener may in fact look nothing at all like the final product. The compiler will be covered in greater detail in a later section (chapter 24), but suffice to say that you can work in one font, say the default Cochin, but publish in an industry standard font like Times New Roman, without having to change your source text. What this means for you is that certain aspects of your editing can be conveyed through the compiler, like a range of italicised text, while the base font itself can be changed beneath that. Scrivener’s editor can thus be used like a typical word processor, but with the knowledge that rich text formatting can be altered later on to produce different results.

Scrivener is not intended to be a full-blown word processor, but rather a word generating environment. It is not a layout tool, but a tool for cutting the text that will become your book. Many authors who have stricter formatting requirements, such as scriptwriters, will start their projects in Scrivener, and end in a word processor or desktop publishing, or some other specialised application. Someone writing a novel or short story could very well do the whole thing in Scrivener, including the final print for submission and export to Word format for sending an electronic copy."
