    Unsourced citation?

How can I get my sources to show up correctly on Ancestry?

I tend to use Free-Form Text but do categorise my sources according to what they are.

I have also tried to upload both 5.5 and Ancestry.com GEDCOMs.

But they just show as 'Unsourced citation'....

    Hi,

I would recommend contacting Ancestry.com's support about this issue -- only they can tell you why the citations are being listed as "Unsourced citations". Once they've outlined why the data is being imported that way, we'll be better able to help resolve it (if, in fact, the problem is on our end - it may not be).

Well, what I'm getting at is whether everyone else has the same issue? I can't be the only Ancestry user.

I can give you a general answer which may or may not be the case for you.

In Ancestry's scheme of doing things, sources are always attached to an event.

I cannot offer anything specific other than advising contacting Ancestry.

I don't have an answer, but have the same problem. My uploaded tree has more sources attached to an given event than I have on Reunion, and they are all "Unsourced citations" according to Ancestry. None of them are the full, correct citation, some are just the Memo field of the event or some other incomplete chunk of the citations, so it's out of context, means little to nothing, and looks awful to whoever is looking at my tree. I discovered this months after uploading the GEDCOM, because I rarely use my tree at Ancestry.

The prospect of fixing the sources of everyone in the Ancestry tree is too much to bear, so I do it only when I happen to be in my tree for some other reason. I've found Ancestry's method of editing or adding sources to be incredibly clumsy and difficult, and non-intuitive, which could partly explain why so few people cite any sources. But then Ancestry isn't in it to help genealogists, they are just in it for the money.

I'm not sure I can face contacting Ancestry... I wouldn't expect customer service. I'm a huge fan of their censuses online –*but only find the tree helpful for 'hints' (now long since incorporated into my own database)....

Susan - I agree with the frustration you experienced in trying to figure out how to correct the sources in FTM. I was in contact with them via 'chat' this morning and there appears to be no easy method to resolve this issue. The recommended way was to 'replace' the source - I am 83 years old and the thought of even attempting to correct 2500 sources against 31,000 individuals is beyond my patience and life span! :-)

I'm staying with REUNION 11 unless and until FTM (Ancestry or MacKiev) can figure a way to resolve this issue without having re-invent the wheel, so to speak.
