    Movie Format

    I have a movie in .mp4 format.

When I create my Web Project, this movie is not recognised.

Is there a different format required? If so, can I change the format of this movie?

    Re: Movie Format

I don't have any movies linked to my family file, so I'm not speaking from personal experience here, but mp4 is supposed to be a supported format.

If you go to Reunion Preferences, Web->Reports->Media Page, is the Movies box checked?

Could you explain this in more detail? E.g., where do you get the message that the movie is not recognized? During the process of creating the web project, or after uploading the web project to you website and trying to access the movie via your web browser, etc.?

      Thanks!

When I put the movie into the media for my Great Grandfather, in Reunion it plays with no problem. When I then make it a Web Project when I go to access the movie there is a 'Q' with a question mark on top. The movie is 60mb. Could this be too large?

What browser are you using to try and view the movie?

The Q with question mark indicates that the browser thinks that QuickTime is not installed for that browser.

will return lots of discussion about playing .mp4 files on the web, and what other formats might be better.

What is a URL to this page containing the video?

I have Quicktime installed on my computer. I am using Safari.

I haven't put the web project on the internet. It is in Dropbox and I share the link with family members.

Is there a size limit on movies that can be imported in a Web Project?

Did a small test of a Web Project with a mp4 movie (196 MB) linked to a person, put WebProject on DropBox. Public link works and mp4 movie without problems.

Well that's interesting. I wonder what I'm doing wrong? I drag it into the media section and it plays ok but not in the web project! I'll keep persevering.

I think the problem is your browser, either a preference setting or a missing plug-in. Can you view other mp4 files in your browser? Do you use Safari? Is the preference "Allow Internet plug-ins?" set to "Allow Plug-ins?"

I had a look in preferences and 'Allow Plug-ins' is checked.

I can play mp4 files on my computer so Quicktime is installed. Is this what you mean?

No. Being able to play mp4 files on your computer doesn't necessarily mean you can view mp4 files on the Internet; your browser must be configured correctly to do that (it has to know what codec or extension to use to play things back). (But if it's Safari it probably should be able to.) And the server that the file is on has to be sending the right headers. It all gets very complicated.

If you can view other mp4 videos in your browser, though, we can rule out bad configuration as a cause.

Following up on Dennis’s comment, you can check this as follows:
                        (1) Launch Safari if it is not already open.
                        (2) In the Finder locate your mp4 file and drag it into your Safari window; or alternatively with Safari as the active window, select File -> Open from the menu bar and navigate to your mp4 file and select it.
                        (3) The movie should immediately start playing in the Safari window.
                        (4) But if it doesn’t play then this further confirms a configuration issue of some sort.

Yes I have ticked on 'movies'.

It is obviously recognising a movie file is supposed to be there, I just can't play it.
