I'm using 8.06 and trying to build gedcom. Database is over 45K names and when I try to export gedcom it goes:

Scanning, Exporting people, Exporting families, Exporting data, Exporting sources. Then the program will "bomb" and I have to restart & rebuild index or the activity stops after "source". The 5 actions take about 15-20 seconds.

If I split the file into smaller (10K people) the operation goes OK.

This problem has only started when I got to 40K. Any suggestions?

I can't help with a solution, but I can say that I regularly export a GEDCOM from a file of very nearly 68,000 people with no problems.

So 40,000 is not some magic limiting number.

For the benefit of others. Michael emailed me and suggested the problem was text size in note field - I've replied to his email to me. Here is what I found.

Michael,

I copied the note section into Word and there are 12 pages which contain 32,484 chars without spaces and 39,307 with spaces. I went to Reunion HELP and I see free text field is 30,000.

I had copied the chaps WILL to his note field.

I've done the same with a couple more, so will go through and make the changes.

Thanks again.

Bill

The Notes fields in my database contain lots and lots of text, till about 56.000 characters.
According to the manual a single note field can contain a max. of 64.000 characters.

I never had problems with Gedcom exporting with such very large notefields with OS X ... untill upgrading to OS 10.4 (Tiger)
And with the answer of Michael I tested the gedcom exporting on OS 10.3.9 (Panther) and I experienced NO problems, so the problem must be in OS 10.4.3. (or perhaps in combination with Reunion).

Hope this is a glitch in the OS X 10.4.3 (and not in Reunion) and that this is corrected in OS X 10.4.4.

It's an occasional problem we see with large blocks of uninterrupted text. The workaround is to break up the large blocks into two or more smaller text blocks. This will be fixed in Reunion 9.
