    Creating gedcom files

I want to give a cousin a gedcom of the ancestors and descendants of our common ancestor, but I can't work out how to do this except by manually marking each person in the index, which will take some time. Is there an easier way?

Yes, no need for manual marking. If John Smith is your common ancestor:
[1] go to John Smith's card
[2] click on the "Mark" section of the navbar on the left
[3] mark 99 generations (or the number you want) of "Ancestors" of "John Smith". You will probably also want to check "Mark spouses"
[4] then mark 99 generations (or the number you want) of "Descendants" of "John Smith and Mary Jones". Make sure "Unmark everybody first" is not checked.

Now you can export the GEDCOM you wanted.

As an alternative, you could also just have "Mark"ed "All Relatives..." of "John Smith" and seen if that was good enough for export....
