For those who are interested in finding out more about genetic genealogy (using your DNA to assist in researching your family origins) I've posted an article on my website on using Y-DNA and mtDNA for researching your paternal and maternal lines respectively:

Y-DNA is the part of one's DNA which is passed down from father to son and can thus track one's paternal line. mtDNA is passed from mother to all children, and thus can track back one's maternal line.
