Hi
I have a tree that has me as the source, then follows both my parents' sides. Now that the tree has 30,000+ people in it, I was thinking about splitting it into 2 trees - one for my mother's side and one for my father's and making them the source. Has anyone ever done this and if so, how easy/successful was it? Also, how do I do it?
The other reason for doing it is so that I can instantly tell which people are on which side of my family when I am contacted, plus I feel happier knowing that the trees will be smaller and more manageable.
Anyone with pros and cons, will be keen to hear from you.

...Anyone with pros and cons ...A search of ReunionTalk using the obvious keywords "split tree" (without the quotes) should give you much reading material as this has often been discussed here, including the following thread previously initiated by you

...As for directions to split a family file (if that is what you really want to do), go to the Reunion Manual and search for "split file" (without the quotes). Details instructions can be found by going to the first search result.

Hello Liz,
Although there were many discussions on the ReunionTalk, the main opinion is: never split a familyfile, sooner or later you regret it (most people do).
Within Reunion you can decide who your own source-person (only one a time).
With a few simple steps you can immediately see on the familycard if a person is from father's or mother's side (there are several methode, but I describe one).
- mark all the ancestors from your father (don't forget to unmark first): then direct ancestors
- [or mark all the relatives from your Dad (Find -> Relatives -> Identify)]: the Relatives
- go to Change -> Set Flags en click on Set an choose New, name ex. Dad
- check Marked people en click on the button Set
- Put the flags on the view of the familycard
Same procedure with Mom's side
But it's your decision.

Hi Liz - I don't weigh in on this debate much, but one other perspective about splitting a file from an admittedly chart-centric person is that once you split your file, your options for creating charts centered on yourself or your siblings/children/nephews/nieces becomes very limited. Frans' suggestion about how to segregate the data for work purposes is right on, and if you need a sterile file, you can export one side or the other into a separate file as required. This second file can be used for research and sharing, but of course shouldn't be used for updating.

Hi
Thank you Tim, Frans and Byron.
Sorry Byron, yes I did ask that question a while ago. I asked it again in case there were different opinions since last time. Frans, your suggestion is a good one. Not sure why I didn't think before about flagging cos I do it a lot with other things. Tim, thanks for highlighting the disadvantages also.
I have decided I will not split, but instead utilise the flagging option and leave things as they are - I guess I should have listened to my mother (if it aint broke, don't fix it).
Once again, much appreciated.
Liz
