I am new to the use of genealogy databases and wonder about what one gets when subscribing to one such as Ancestry.com. Is it easy to use? Does it have good coverage of the UK and North America? Is it a good value? I have looked at the 2 week free offer and wonder if I don't subscribe after using the 2 weeks free is it easy to sever the tie?

Thanks

Andy

Andy,

I think Ancestry is a good value. I have been a member for several years. It has very good coverage of North America or the United States. Don't quite remember if Canada is included with the US. As for the UK, that's extra. LOTS extra! Is it easy? Depends. Since you would be new to Ancestry, you wouldn't be wed to doing things in a certain way and when Ancestry changes things, the change won't upset you too much. Btw, Ancestry will change things. I'll give you an example of what someone gets from Ancestry. Over the weekend or maybe sometime last week, Ancestry introduced what they called the world's largest resource of yearbooks. I have found several relatives that without the resource, I wouldn't have pictures of them. Just remember one thing, you have to go through lots of Bravo Sierra before you find your "rose."

Andy:
I have used it for several years and really enjoy it! Use the US version, have plenty.

I like sending a gedcom over to my Family Tree Maker so it looks on Ancestry and "finds" connections. Uses a neat little gress leaf if it finds anything on that person. Saves a ton of searching. Guess FTM is going to release a Mac version this fall. I will probably get it, but Reunion is still Number One!

Then I can simply enter those into Reunion. Using 2 computers, next to each other really helps!

I have been pleased with Ancestry.com for several years. Most other search sites require the exact DOB or DOD before it presents a match. Some even require the exact spelling of a name, i.e. "William" vs "Wm". If the search site data was entered as "Wm" and you enter "William", it will not be found at those search sites. Ancestry.com presents variables which allows it to find the "William" vs "Wm". Sometimes it overkills this feature but it is worth this small annoyance.

I have also used Ancestry.com for several years and can recommend it. With records and research from individuals still being added, there always seems to be something new to discover. Only recently did I start putting the info I had into a Family Tree on Ancestry.com and discovered that for each additional person I add to my tree, Ancestry.com presents "hints" to research others have done on persons with that name. That has proved interesting.
