View Full Version : The Angst of Adding a New Family's Gedcom

Fellow puzzlers—

I have recently discovered and positively verified a branch (55 people 28 families) of the family whose existence until very recently was unknown.

I made the mistake of importing their Gedcom into my master file, NOT a separate file.

Now I have 6-8-10 duplicate individuals. How can I safely delete a few of my original individuals and then create a link from those imported family cards to my original family cards? Right now as far as reports are concerned it's like I have two parallel universes running side-by-side with no way of connecting them

There is also the problem of this Gedcom coming off of RootsWeb and so it has a dozen or so individuals with cards saying nothing but LIVING. Am guessing I have to get those individuals' personal info from the branch family's genealogist and update it all manually. (And of course verify ALL of it to give it ligitimacy.)

Wishing I'd have planned ahead!

Thnx. —A

In this situation the easiest option is probably to Match and Merge these "few" duplicated individuals.

Probably the safest way to do this is to Mark the pairs of duplicates, 1 pair at a time - ie two marked individuals who are the same person, then select Match and Merge People... from the Find menu.

Tell it to Match Marked people to Marked people and then the next window that appears will allow you to merge the higher numbered (newly imported) person into the existing person. Save the changes.

Repeat this for the other duplicated people.

You could mark all of the pairs at the same time and choose Marked People to Marked People, and try and do one Match and Merge operation, but I've found that Reunion doesn't always find all the pairs in such situations, so unless you pay careful attention you'll end up with "odd" end results. Doing them one pair at a time ensures that you get them all.

Good Luck
