As we all know, 90% of the world has yet to discover the MacIntosh computer and Reunion. So, if you were to bequeath your Reunion database to a Windoz cousin upon your death, how would you get "all" of the information transferred to him/her?
I have FTM on an old Windoz laptop, and have been experimenting with GEDCOMs as a medium (yes, we all know that there are serious limitations). Using Reunion's Export window I have been able to convert some of the so-called non-standard tags to those that FTM will recognize (e.g. change NAMS to _NAMS). I have been unsuccessful in going into FTM and forcing it to recognize other non-standard tags, even though FTM uses "additional Facts" – they call them Fact1, etc. (there are hints that the latest FTM2005 may allow some of this, but I haven't bought it yet). That, plus excluding my own "non-standard" tags which I have added to my Reunion data base, I am still left with a couple of major problems in transferring "all" of my information.
Reunion and FTM treat the "Details" of a source citation differently, and FTM can't seem to make the translation so it ignores all of them. Reunion uses the form, e.g.:
1 Zelma Florence /McPherson/
2 SOUR @S196@
3 TEXT "Zelma Florence McPherson" Parents are shown as...
whereas FTM uses the form:
1 Zelma Florence /McPherson/
2 SOUR @S06671@
3 DATA
4 TEXT "Zelma Florence McPherson" Parents are shown as...
FTM and Reunion handle prefixes (Dr., Col, etc.), suffixes (Jr., Sr., etc.) and things like Cause of Death entirely differently, and again FTM can't seem to make the translation. (I have seen nothing in either Reunion or FTM that allows the user to have access to these, so again it would require modifying the GEDCIM file) In this case, FTM simply ignores them i.e. there is not even an error message in the List of Errors that FTM generates.
FTM has a limit on the length of its Notes sections of some 32Kbytes, approximately 8 pages of text. Since I summarize land records, wills, etc. in my Notes, this is a serious limitation.
My first two examples above would require more than a simple Find and Replace function to fix. Does anyone know of a Text Editing software program with a macro kind of function that could be used to "process" my Reunion GEDCOM to make those translations?
Given that even a modified GECOM file may never be "complete," how would you bequeath "all" of your research to your Windoz cousin? E.g. an Ahnentafel report only picks up direct ancestors. A complete set of Family Group Sheets and Person Sheets would cover it, I guess – true? I can't find any other Reunion "report" that would transfer "all" of my information, even in a Text format.
