View Full Version : What happens to images files that are attached?

I've owned Reunion 8 since shortly after it was introduced, but a series of personal problems kept me away from genealogy for years. I'm now getting back in the swing of things and have gleefully discovered the ability to download images of census pages and death certificates. Now I'd like to know how Reunion manages them, because I'm not finding the answer in the manual. (Unfortunately I can sometimes be search challenged.)

I have figured out how to add, for example, the image of a death certificate to an individual's record or to add a census image to a family card. But, what I can't figure out is where those image files are stored. Is a copy being generated that stays in the Reunion folder? (I can't find one.) Or, is Reunion simply linking to the image file from the location in which it is stored on my hard drive? That's what appears to be happening, but I'd like to have someone confirm that before I get too carried away attaching things and then decide to "clean up" my hard drive and lose all of my links.

Thank you.

Reunion links to the image whereever it is on your hard drive.

So before you do much linking think a bit about where you want these images stored on your computer, and do you perhaps want to use iPhoto to manage the images and then link to them in the iPhoto Library with Reunion.

Also, consider how many images you might end up with. I have mine broken down into a number of folders that also work for me with the online software TNG that I use to put my genealogy online. See the last post in this thread...

That's what I suspected, but I wanted it confirmed. No iPhoto for me, thanks. I love my Apple computers, but I'm not into "all things Apple" so don't use it. I have a great filing system so will just put the images in my genealogy files and do the links to Reunion from there. Thank you!

This is going off topic, but it's something I noticed while using Reunion after posting this question. Why can I not flip back and forth between the image file attached to a person sheet at the same time I have a window open to enter information? I thought that would be a great way to make sure I was copying information correctly, especially birth and death data. When I have an image open in Preview, I can flip back and forth between active windows, but I'm locked into only one active window in Reunion when the image is attached to Reunion. Is that a bug or a "feature"?!
