View Full Version : capitalization of place names

I have an unusual problem that has just cropped up in the past week or so.

In place names, Reunion has suddenly decided that every word should be capitalized, even though in some there are words that are not supposed to be capitalized.

For example, in the place Dar es Salaam, Tanganyika, East Africa the “es” is supposed to lower case and it suddenly decided to capitalize it.

I have lots of Swedish ancestors. The word for county is Swedish is län and I had listed all counties with that word included, in lower case. This word is normally lower case as in Kristianstad län or Kalmar län but Reunion suddenly started capitalizing län. In both of these cases, there is a city in that country by the same name and I had listed län to distinguish the county from the city.

It doesn’t seem to matter what’s in the Speed Name listing, it still changes it. It had been working fine. All the names in Speed Name had the part of the name in lower case that I wanted in lower case but now it changes when I hit “save”.

There’s nothing in the options menu that addresses this and I tried everything I could to fix it. I began by quitting the application and restarting it. I restarted the computer. I reinstalled the software. I dumped the file and reinstalled it from a backup I had on CD. I ran the repair on our file. Nothing fixes it.

Any suggestions?

I would bet that you have inadvertently checked Initial Caps. Go to a card and attempt to edit it, on the right, below the sound-ex code is Last Name Uppercase and Initial Caps. If it is unchecked, I will be surprised.

You're right! That fixed it, but I have no idea how it got checked in the first place. I've never done anything with that option. Strange.

Thanks!!!
