View Full Version : Field selection and cursor position for editing

I have been bugged by the need to make several mouse clicks in order to edit data in the events tab of the Edit Person window. I just opened a Reunion 8 file to see if I was imagining things and noted that when I click on a data field, the entire event is momentarily highlighted and then the cursor changes to the vertical edit bar at the position that I clicked on the text.
In Reunion 9, when I click on text in an event data field, the entire event line is highlighted and stays that way. I must click a second time to select the data field within the event, and then it highlights the entire string of text. It requires a third click, after a pause, in order to get the vertical editing bar to appear within the text. Clicking too soon keeps the text highlighted, as when you click twice to select a sentence.
Even when moving from one data field to another, within an event, it takes two clicks, as the first selects all the text in the adjacent field.

I can't figure out whether this is just me, or no one else has noticed or mentioned it. I tried going to the mouse settings in system preferences, as well as the Logitech mouse control panel, but can't find any settings that would affect it. And I just ran the test on both files/versions without making any changes. Any suggestions are appreciated.

It's been designed that way, and I too find it sub-optimal ;)

I did reduce my double-click 'trigger' time so at least the edit event sheet doesn't keep popping up.

My suggestion was to only highlight the entire event if you clicked on the event title in the Type column. That would reduce it to two clicks.

Something similar also happens when editing a single word or number in the Source Fields of the Edit Source window.

When adding a source, for consistency I usually duplicate a similar, existing source and edit it. If there is more than one word in the field two double clicks are required to select a single word.

In R8 a double click on one word selected just that word.

(Those double clicks certainly add up after a while 8^)

I'll jump on this bandwagon! All this clicking is causing an ache in my hands! To say nothing of frustration in my weak ol' brainpan...
