I am new to MAC and Reunion. I need to import a very large data file from Family Tree. Any recommendations/suggestions would be appreciated. There is so much that is still confusing to me about MAC and certainly Reunion.
Thank you.

If you can, print the old file. Import the gedcom into an NEW file, work with it, fix it, get to know it, delete the people you don't want (if any) then start adding new people. The more information in Family Tree, the more glitches in the gedcom (an imperfect file transfer method, but maybe better than retyping).

Welcome to both Mac and Reunion. With time you will find using Reunion on a Mac (note spelling) to be intuitive and awesome in its power. Probably THE most important feature your should learn to use is the Cmd-A find instead of the normal Cmd-F find. The "Advanced" find is incredibly powerful and surprisingly easy to use.
More to the point, importing data from FTM via a GEDCOM file is straight forward - simply create the GEDCOM in FTM using the 5.5 protocols (standard) and then import the data into a new (blank) Reunion file. Your data should all port over with very little effort. If not, ask for help on the list - someone is sure to help!

Hi Mary
Thank you for your response. Actually, I have files dating back to the 1600s and obviously I don't want to lose any of those...I have now copied my GEDCOM file to CD and yes, I can print out a genealogy report as well so that I can "fix" anything that may be missed in the transfer... is that what you mean? A lot of work in my Family Tree program.
I appreciate the suggestion.

CarolAnn,
How did your import from Family Tree work out?
I am in the same position with a new Mac laptop and a fairly big Family Tree program on my old PC. I have lots of comments in the notes field and don't want to convert over to Reunion unless all those will also be imported.
Was it worth the trouble?
Regards. Mick

I have a 36,000 names file in FTM and it translates into Reunion 8 ok. I had some problems when I traslated that say file in to Reuinon 9. For the most part only last names with a space between names did I have trouble. I found that if I put a \Van Rye\ on the last name it translated properly. It also sorted properly.
