View Full Version : Combining pedigree charts

I recently researched for my new brother-in-law and created a separate family file for him. I would now like to produce a pedigree chart for him and my sister together. I had the "bright" idea of creating a new family file with him and all his ancestors (only 5 generations) and importing my sister and her ancestors (up to 5th generation). I married them and gave them a dummy child. I then did a pedigree chart for this child. Pretty much what I wanted, but when I tried to remove the dummy child box, the whole chart disappeared. Duh! Should have realized that. Is there any way I can make one combined pedigree chart? I know I could simply make 2 separate charts and copy the second into the first but won't that be difficult to match the alignments? Any suggestions gratefully received.

He is really a part of your family now. When they have children, his relatives as well as yours are the children's relatives. Why don't you combine the two families? When I began researching, I had a file for my family and one for his. My children kept having children and I was duplicating all over the place. I merged the families (not at all hard to do with Reunion) and now I have one consistent database and I can create many different charts and reports.

Thanks, Terry. But that won't solve my problem of the chart as they don't have any children, and won't, as they are of "mature age." I can't see how to produce one neat chart with both of them on it at the bottom, and their ancestors fanning out above them.

...but when I tried to remove the dummy child box, the whole chart disappeared...True, you can't delete the dummy child box, but you can hide it or make it into a text caption.
Once you have all the other boxes placed, select the box for the dummy child and set the Line to 'None' in the tool bar on the left side. Then the dummy child box will look like it's not connected to anything, even though it really is.
At this point you can hide the box by setting all the colors to white, or you set the box text to say something like, "This chart was created by Penny Eve in 2007" and move it to the bottom right corner of the chart.
Make sure you have the Selection Mode set to "One Box" or the entire chart might move when you drag this single box.

Have you tried leaving the dummy child in your family file and creating a Relative Chart beginning with this child? In my test, I was able to delete only the dummy child's box from the chart.

Thanks a lot, Terry, Gregg, and Deb. Will try Gregg's solution. Assume OK unless I post again.
