I am in the process of completing my maternal family tree with Reunion.
It is in the final proof-reading stage. Several family members who have reviewed a the proof document are confused by the numbers preceeding a persons name in the printed version. For Example:
(8) 1.1.4.1.7.3.1.3 Jean Anderson
The (8) is for the eighth generation I believe, but how do I explain the following numbers? I feel I need to include a paragraph in the printed version to explain this numbering system.
Can anyone help?

For an explanation of that "Legal" numbering, search the Manual for "numbering" and choose "7. Outline Methods". (Also scroll down that page for information on "Legal Outline Method and Multiple Spouses".)
You can control the presence of the generation prefix and the outline-numbering style (if applicable) when you define the Layout for whatever report or chart you are using. (In the Layout for a Register Report, you can enable the inclusion of the Parenthetical Ancestry after the name in addition to the standard numbering preceding the name.)

OK, so if I am reading my example correctly it would go like this:
(8)1.1.4.1.7.3.1.3 Jean Anderson
Source persons 1st Child's 4th Child's, 1st Child's, 7th Child's, 3rd Child's, 1st Child's 3rd Child who is Jean Anderson.
Correct?

I'd suggest, however, that as one is presumably looking at Jean Anderson when the question is raised as to what that numbering says about how that person "fits" in the family, the Manual's description--which start from the person at issue and moves up (backwards in time)--is more useful. (But that's just an opinion.)

Forgive me, David, but where is the Outlins pop-up menu to change the numbering methods? The choice of numbering style is done when you define a Layout for whichever report or chart you are using. So after you select a report or chart using the Create menu, in the window that then appears there's a Layout pop-up menu. Select "Define Layouts" in that menu and, in the middle column of the window that then appears, there'll be a Setting for numbering options, if applicable. For example, if you are doing a Descendant Report, after choosing "Define Layouts, the next window is "Descendant Report Layout" and one of the Settings is "Indent/Outline". Click on it and then you'll see on the right side the "Outline" pop-up menu--along with the option to include "Generation Prefix". (In the left column, you can create as many different Layouts as you wish, each with whatever combination of Settings you might want to use. Then you can easily select in the Layouts pop-up menu whichever one you want for furture report or chart creations without having to go through the Settings selection again.)
