Apologies if this has been covered before but I'm a prospective purchaser of Reunion and I have a question re attaching documents other than multimedia files. I am using the demo version and can add for example a pdf file but not subsequently open it from the multimedia window as you can with a .jpg. Have I missed something or could it be a restriction on the demo version?

Thanks in anticipation,

Brian ...

Short answer is no, you can't open PDFs.

Long answer is, I'm surprised you can even attach them, it didn't work for my test. According to the online manual (which I believe isn't available in the demo), Reunion supports:

Reunion supports the following image file formats:

* PICT
* TIFF
* JPEG
* GIF
* PNG
* Photoshop (2.5 or newer)
* Silicon Graphics Inc.
* Quick Time Image Files
* MacPaint
* JFIF.

Reunion opens four common types of sound files:

* Finder Sound Files (sfil)
* Audio Interchange File Format (AIFF or AIFC)
* WAV
* MP3.

Reunion displays digital movies saved in the QuickTime movie format.

There's been a bit of talk about support for other file supports on these forums, so Leicester know it's a need. They're also busy working on a new version now.

I have all manner of text files, PDFs, RTFs, Reunion files, etc. I usually work with my 'Sources' folder open in the Finder when using Reunion, so I just switch apps, scroll to the source, and open from the Finder.

How does one do this? I am technically challenged for showing to apps. My Reunion 8 is running on my desktop OSX 10.2.8

I think you'll find you do know how to do this ;-)

The Finder is the application where your folders and files show up. Sometimes called the desktop.

Here's how I work:

I open the Sources folder in the Finder. I switch to Reunion (which is always running!) and work on my family tree.

When I need to look up the scanned document for a source, I command-tab to switch to the Finder. The Sources window will be front-most. I type the source number, which scrolls the window to that file. I use command-O to open the source.

Making sense?

Brian:

I hope this is an answer that may help. I open .pdf files with Preview then save as (name) and .jpg. I can then attach them in the mulitmedia window.

In most cases, it is better to use GIF or PNG than JPEG.

Tom uses a separate set of data for his sources including images. Until Reunion 9 is released and hopefully allows the attachment of images to sources and events (like marriages), is it best to use Tom's separate file method or to put everything into the Reunion's Multimedia File (trying to keep track of it by tags or flags) and then separate them out when we get Reunion 9?

Any opinions?

Thanks.

In most cases, it is better to use GIF or PNG than JPEG.

Use jpg files for photographs -- the format is designed to include the numerous shades used in "halftones" (the term used by printers and designers).

Use gif or png for black & white documents, drawings, sketches, etc. The fewer colors used make the file smaller.

Right. But I was specifically responding to converting from PDF, which usually involves the sort of line art at which JPEG sucks.
