    Alternate Names

    What is the best way to enter alternate spellings and pronunciation of first and last names? I have several people entered and on researching them I realize that I have their Yiddish name but they used a different name on American documents. For example, my paternal grandmother's first name was Minya, but I found that it often appears as Minnie in documents.

    Same thing with last name, I'm finding that her maiden name appears with 4 different spellings, one of which is a complete translation from the original to the same word in English.

    I set up an Alternate Name field as a FACT using the Fields preferences. Set a GEDCOM tag of ANAM. I did the same for Alternate Marriage dates (AMAR). That way I can add as many alternate names as I want and attach the source where the name appeared that way to each.

      I enter them in the form

      Moffat or Moffet or Moffitt or Moffatt

      That way when the genealogy ends up online at my website, and Google indexes it, and then someone searches for it, they're much more like to find it no matter how they think the last name was spelled.

          Re: Alternate Names

          I had been entering them with the primary name and the alternates in ( ). I had just wondered if there was a standard to use, especially for GEDCOM and publishing my tree,

            Hi Roger-when you say you enter them in the form, what form are you referring to? Are you talking about the Person Card? Thanks, Judy

              Form = Style

              Surnames go in the Last Name field, First Names go in the First Name field.
